Sri Lanka’s tourism sector recorded its weakest monthly performance of 2026 in April, with visitor arrivals falling sharply amid seasonal travel changes and mounting geopolitical uncertainty linked to the Middle East.

Latest industry data show Sri Lanka welcomed 135,643 tourists in April, marking a 22.32% year-on-year (YoY) decline, as the traditional winter travel season tapered off and disruptions in global aviation networks weighed on traveller demand. On a month-on-month basis, too, the footfall has declined by 26.3% from 183,979 in March.

The slowdown comes as heightened tensions in the Middle East continue to impact international air travel costs and routes, with Sri Lanka particularly exposed due to its heavy reliance on Gulf-based transit hubs for long-haul connectivity between Europe, Asia, and other source markets.

Industry observers noted flight disruptions, higher ticket prices, and shifting traveller sentiment linked to regional instability have added pressure on inbound tourism during the month.

The weaker April performance also dragged down year-to-date (YTD) arrivals, with total visitor numbers declining 2.3% YoY to 876,277.

The highest single-day arrivals during the month was recorded on 2 April, when 6,624 tourists entered the country. However, average daily arrivals fell to 4,521, down from 5,820 during the same period last year.

India remained Sri Lanka’s largest source market in April, contributing 42,645 visitors, accounting for nearly 31% of total arrivals. China followed with 10,544 arrivals, while the UK contributed 10,425. Australia and Russia rounded out the top five source markets with 9,943 and 6,898 visitors, respectively.

Other key contributors included France, Germany, the US, Bangladesh, and Japan.

On a cumulative basis, India continued to dominate Sri Lanka’s tourism inflows this year with 189,918 visitors, followed by the UK with 88,845 and Russia with 72,816.

Despite the recent slowdown, Sri Lanka is targeting 3 million tourist arrivals and $ 4 billion in tourism earnings in 2026, though the latest trends suggest the industry may face growing headwinds if geopolitical tensions and aviation disruptions persist.
