The body of a Bangladeshi migrant worker killed in Malaysia was returned to his home district of Jhenaidah and laid to rest on Sunday, nearly three weeks after his death, family members said.

Nazrul Islam, 32, who had been working in Malaysia since 2018, was buried in his village of Gobordanga in Kaliganj upazila after his body arrived in Bangladesh late Friday.

His remains were flown into Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight and handed over to relatives in the early hours of Saturday following completion of formalities.

A cheque of 35,000 taka ($320) was provided to his family by the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment to help cover burial expenses, officials said.

Family members alleged that Islam was hacked to death in Malaysia on April 14 following a dispute with business associates, who they claim later attempted to burn his body. Another Bangladeshi national, Kohinur Begum, was also killed in the same incident, according to relatives.

“He had ongoing disputes with his partners, and there were earlier attempts on his life,” his brother Zahir Uddin informed, adding that Islam had been planning to return home permanently.

Islam had set up a small integrated farm in Malaysia, raising livestock including cattle, goats, and poultry, his family said, alleging that jealousy over his business success may have motivated the attack.

The killing has left his home village in mourning, with residents gathering to pay their respects as his body was brought back early Sunday and buried in the family graveyard.

Local police in Bangladesh said they had limited information about the case as the incident occurred abroad.

Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, Jellal Hossain, said they have no direct information, as the incident occurred abroad.

Islam’s father has appealed to the government to pursue justice, while authorities said relevant agencies would take necessary steps in coordination with counterparts overseas.
