The historic Abdul Jabbar’s Balikhela, one of Bangladesh’s oldest traditional wrestling events, is set to take place on April 25 at Laldighi Maidan, accompanied by a three-day Baisakhi fair expected to attract large numbers of local and other tourism enthusiasts.
Now in its 117th edition, the event will be held alongside a Baisakhi fair running from April 24 to 26 in and around the venue, combining heritage sports with festive cultural experiences.
All preparations have been completed, CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said at a press conference held at the Chattogram City Corporation library auditorium on Wednesday. He noted that the event has evolved into a major folk festival, reflecting the city’s cultural identity and drawing participation from across the country.
The mayor said the late Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar first introduced the traditional Balikhela in 1909 to train youths during the anti-British movement. Over time, it has grown into a widely recognised cultural attraction.
In recognition of the founder’s legacy, the intersection near the field has officially been renamed Abdul Jabbar Square by the Chittagong City Corporation, with a terracotta artwork unveiled to commemorate the tradition. Earlier in the day, the mayor inaugurated the square.
Event organisers said the wrestling competition will be inaugurated by Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali, Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, while the mayor will attend as chief guest at the prize-giving ceremony. Abu Sufian is expected to join as a special guest.
The accompanying Baisakhi fair will feature more than a hundred stalls across the surrounding area, offering traditional food, crafts, and cultural items, creating a vibrant marketplace atmosphere for visitors.
Authorities said extensive security arrangements have been put in place, including CCTV monitoring, watchtowers, drone surveillance, and deployment of SWAT teams, bomb disposal units, Rapid Action Battalion, medical teams, and fire services to ensure a safe and orderly event.
Organisers said they aim to promote Balikhela internationally as a unique cultural tourism attraction and have called for formal recognition of Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar’s contribution, along with the establishment of a dedicated Balikhela Academy in Chattogram.
The event highlights Chattogram’s growing appeal as a cultural tourism destination, blending history, tradition, and festive atmosphere for local and international audiences.
