5 Bangladeshi nationals died in a gas cylinder explosion at Dhigurah Island in Maldives, with two others critically injured and undergoing treatment.

Accident occurred around 2:30am on Friday at a construction company guesthouse on the island. Two critically injured workers have been transferred to capital Male for advanced medical care.

Deceased victims are Taj Uddin Islam, Mohammad Sadar Ali, Mohammad Robin Molla, Safikul Islam and Mohammad Nurnabi Sarkar. Injured workers are Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hossain.

7 workers were rescued in severely burnt condition from inside the guesthouse following the explosion. They were immediately taken to local hospital where duty doctor declared five dead on arrival.

Mohammad Sohel Parvez, Labour Counsellor at Bangladesh High Commission in Maldives, confirmed details citing expatriate Bangladeshis residing on the island. He said one injured worker is receiving treatment in ICU while another is in emergency department. Their condition remains critical.

Parvez stated that a High Commission delegation has been sent to investigate the incident site. Authorities are taking initiatives to repatriate bodies of deceased workers to their families quickly.

Explosion occurred at guesthouse belonging to local construction company where Bangladeshi workers were staying. Exact cause of cylinder blast remains under investigation.

Thousands of Bangladeshi workers are employed in the construction and tourism sectors in the Maldives. Such cylinder explosions at workplaces have created fresh public concern over the safety of migrant workers in the island nation.
