Lufthansa Group is renaming its Green Fare as the Impact Fare and says the change reflects new regulatory requirements for environmental communication, according to a company press release.
The group said the offering itself continues under the new name, which it said puts more emphasis on customers’ contribution to sustainability in aviation. The Green Fare was introduced in 2023, and well over five million passengers have booked it, the release said.
Passengers who choose the fare support the additional use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) across the group’s route network, the company said. SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel. They also contribute to selected climate projects outside the group’s own value chain, which, depending on the project, aim to avoid or remove carbon dioxide (CO₂). The fare can be booked with Lufthansa Group airlines in all travel classes.
For each booking, the group said, it will use an additional amount of SAF in its flight operations within six months of departure. On flights within Europe, the SAF volume is based on 20 percent of the estimated flight-related CO₂ emissions and the contribution to climate projects for the remaining 80 percent. On intercontinental routes the split is 10 and 90 percent, according to the release.
Passengers also receive additional miles and points, the group said. Depending on the booking class and destination, the fare may include more flexible or fee-free rebooking options.
The company said it follows five approaches to lower-emission aviation: fleet modernisation, measures to improve fuel efficiency, the use of SAF, expanding intermodality (combining air travel with other forms of transport), and offers for private and corporate customers who want to support further sustainability measures. It said it has also been involved in global climate and weather research for more than 30 years.
