Lufthansa has completed the special anniversary livery on one of its Airbus A321neo aircraft, which now carries twelve designs based on stories submitted by its employees, the airline said in a statement on Friday.
The aircraft, named “Hamm” and registered D-AIEM, has been flying in the livery for several months while the designs were added step by step over the anniversary year. According to Lufthansa, the designs follow the motto “Made by many. Remembered by all” and honour people who have shaped the airline over the decades.
The airline said the two most recently applied designs reflect the range of stories chosen.
One, suggested by a Lufthansa flight attendant, shows two arms embracing a tail fin. It marks a flight on March 19, 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he and his crew flew from Frankfurt to Bogota to bring stranded travellers home. Lufthansa said many of the passengers had waited at the airport for seven days.
The other design, submitted by a female employee, shows people walking hand in hand in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. From June 1990, she helped set up Lufthansa’s first sales offices in Dresden and celebrated German reunification in Berlin on October 3. Lufthansa said she viewed the tickets sold as a symbol of freedom.
The selection followed an internal call for submissions. A jury shortlisted 20 stories from numerous suggestions, and all employees then voted on the final twelve, the airline said.
The designs are placed in frames around the XXL crane emblem on the aircraft. Lufthansa said the aircraft also carries some historical photos and events, including a photo of the airline’s first two female pilots, Nicola Lisy and Evi Hetzmannseder. Next to each frame is a QR code linking to a website with a background on the design.
The A321neo will fly across Europe with the stories until the end of 2028, according to Lufthansa.
The airline said that two Airbus A320neos, one A350-900, one A380, one Boeing 747-8, and one Boeing 787-9 are also flying in the 100-year design with the XXL crane livery. Lufthansa’s first A350-1000 will join the special anniversary fleet in November, it added.
