Philippine Airlines has committed to order up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets, Boeing announced Monday at the Farnborough Airshow, in what the flag carrier called its largest-ever widebody order to support fleet modernization.

The agreement covers 15 firm 787-10 aircraft, with the option to purchase five more once finalized, according to a Boeing press release. The deal aims to expand Philippine Airlines' regional network and support its long-term fleet renewal plans.

PAL Holdings, Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer Lucio C. Tan III said the investment reflected confidence in the airline's future and the continued growth of air travel, adding that the 787-10 would strengthen its medium- and long-haul fleet while improving efficiency and supporting sustainability goals. He noted that the order comes as Philippine Airlines celebrates 85 years as Asia's first airline, alongside 80 years of partnership with Boeing.

According to Boeing, the 787-10 will complement Philippine Airlines' existing fleet of 10 Boeing 777 jets, offering greater operational flexibility across its medium- and long-haul routes. The aircraft's composite design delivers 25 percent lower fuel use than the planes it typically replaces, giving it the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody jet, the release said.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said the order marked an important step in an 80-year partnership between the two companies, adding that Boeing looked forward to delivering aircraft that would deepen connections across the Philippines, Asia, and beyond.

As the largest member of the 787 family, the 787-10 can carry 300 to 375 passengers up to 13,890 km (7,500 nautical miles), according to Boeing. The aircraft also features the largest dimmable windows of any commercial jet, higher cabin humidity, and turbulence-reduction technology designed to improve passenger comfort.

Philippine Airlines, founded in 1941, currently operates flights from its Manila and Cebu hubs to 29 domestic and 40 international destinations across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. The carrier was recognized by Cirium for the highest on-time performance among Asia-Pacific airlines in 2025 and was invited to join the Oneworld alliance in 2026, according to the release.
