A Somali police officer was killed on Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by an aircraft’s rotating propeller shortly after the aircraft landed at Dhuusamareeb Airport in central Somalia, Somali media reported.
The officer was a member of the security detail of Banaadir Regional Police Commander Ma’alin Mahdi, who had travelled to Dhuusamareeb, the capital of Galmudug state, ahead of the inauguration of Galmudug’s new leader due on Thursday, according to Dalsan TV and Caasimada Online.
The aircraft had landed, and its passengers were getting off when the accident happened, the reports said. Dalsan TV reported that the officer was walking away from the plane when the propeller, still turning, struck his head and that he died at the scene.
Footage circulating on social media shows a uniformed officer coming down the aircraft’s steps and walking away while the propeller is still in motion behind him.
Somali media named the officer as Mukhtar Qasim, a member of the Somali Police Force. Caasimada Online said sources confirmed that the propeller killed him and that his body was taken into Dhuusamareeb town.
No official statement on the cause of the accident or any investigation had been published by the time of writing. The type of aircraft, its operator, and the circumstances of the disembarkation have not been made public.
