Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (Dhaka airport) experienced cancellation of 33 flights today following Middle East airspace closure that began on February 28 due to security concerns.
This was informed through a press release sent by Muhammad Kawsar Mahmud, Assistant Director (Public Relations) of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
7 Middle Eastern countries including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan shut their airspace, severely disrupting air connectivity between Bangladesh and Gulf region. Today's cancellations affected nine airlines operating from Dhaka.
US-Bangla Airlines faced highest disruption with 5 flight cancellations. Air Arabia from Sharjah grounded 6 flights while Emirates Airlines cancelled 4 operations. Qatar Airways and Kuwait Airways each cancelled 4 flights.
Jazeera Airways from Kuwait cancelled 4 flights today. Flydubai from UAE and Gulf Air from Bahrain each grounded 2 flights. National carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines cancelled 2 flights.
Todayâs 33 cancellations add to week-long disruption that has seen 245 total flights cancelled since February 28. Previous days recorded 23 cancellations on February 28, 40 on March 1, 46 on March 2, 39 on March 3, 28 on March 4 and 36 on March 5.
Disruption particularly affects over 50 lakh Bangladeshi migrant workers employed across Gulf countries. Business travellers and families with connections in Middle East region face significant inconvenience and financial losses.
Airlines are attempting to reschedule affected passengers. However, timeline for normalisation remains uncertain as security situation continues in Middle East. Airport authorities are monitoring developments closely.
Passengers travelling to Gulf destinations are advised to check flight status with respective airlines before heading to airport. Airlines have activated customer service teams to assist stranded travellers with rebooking and refund options.
