Air India adopts digital technical logbooks for Boeing widebody fleet

Air India said Monday it has received regulatory approval to implement Electronic Technical Logbooks (ETL) for its Boeing 787 fleet and begin parallel deployment across its Boeing 777 fleet, as part of the airline's ongoing digital transformation and operational modernisation programme.

In a press release, the Tata Group-owned carrier said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved the use of Electronic Technical Logbooks as the primary technical documentation for its Boeing 787 aircraft, while authorising parallel implementation on the airline's Boeing 777 fleet.

According to Air India, the move makes it one of the first airlines to introduce fleet-wide Electronic Technical Logbooks across its entire Boeing 787 widebody fleet, replacing conventional paper-based maintenance records with a fully digital system.

The airline said the ETL platform enables maintenance engineers, flight operations and operational control teams to access and share aircraft technical information in real time. The system is designed to improve coordination, accelerate defect reporting and rectification, strengthen aircraft dispatch reliability and enhance overall maintenance efficiency.

Air India added that the digital platform improves data integrity, traceability and regulatory compliance while providing advanced analytics to support predictive maintenance and engineering decision-making. The paperless system is also expected to reduce paper consumption, contributing to the airline's sustainability goals.

"The implementation of Electronic Technical Logbooks across our widebody Boeing fleet reaffirms the collaborative work involving engineering, flight operations, digital technology teams, OEM partners and the regulator," said Jeremy Yew Jin Kit, Air India's Senior Vice President for Engineering and Maintenance.

"Replacing paper-based processes with real-time digital information, we are improving operational efficiency, strengthening maintenance governance, enhancing regulatory compliance and enabling faster decision-making across our engineering and operations teams," he said.

The airline said the initiative forms part of its broader investment in digital technologies aimed at modernising engineering and maintenance operations while maintaining high standards of safety and regulatory compliance.

Although the new system will operate behind the scenes, Air India said the enhanced maintenance processes are expected to improve aircraft availability, reduce operational disruptions, and support more reliable flight operations for passengers.

The introduction of Electronic Technical Logbooks represents another milestone in Air India's multi-year transformation under Tata Group ownership, as the airline continues investing in digital innovation, fleet modernisation and operational improvements to strengthen its position as a global full-service carrier.
