Air India, WestJet sign interline deal to expand North America connectivity

Air India on Friday announced an interline partnership with Canada’s WestJet, enabling passengers to book single-ticket itineraries and connect seamlessly to more than 30 destinations across Canada and the United States via Toronto and Vancouver.

The agreement allows travellers flying with Air India to link onward to WestJet-operated flights under one booking, with coordinated baggage handling and streamlined transfers, the airline said in a statement.

Under the partnership, Air India passengers arriving in Toronto or Vancouver will gain access to 17 Canadian cities and 14 US destinations served by WestJet. These include major hubs such as Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, and Halifax in Canada, and San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Las Vegas in the United States. Some destinations will also be reachable via Air India’s European gateways, including Amsterdam, Paris, and London.

“Canada continues to be a key market for Air India, driven by strong people-to-people ties and increasing trade between our nations,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India. “By partnering with WestJet, we are making travel across North America more accessible and effortless for our guests.”

John Weatherill, Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer of the WestJet Group, said the agreement would “significantly expand access between India and Canada” and improve connectivity to high-demand destinations across North America.

Air India currently operates 17 weekly non-stop flights to Canada, including 10 to Toronto and seven to Vancouver. In addition, it runs 75 weekly services to key European hubs that can facilitate onward connections under the new arrangement.

The interline partnership comes as Air India undergoes a major transformation following its return to the Tata Group in 2022, including fleet expansion and network growth. The deal is expected to strengthen its long-haul network by leveraging WestJet’s regional reach across North America.

Tickets for combined itineraries are now available through Air India’s website, mobile application, and travel agents worldwide, offering passengers greater flexibility and connectivity options.

The move reflects intensifying competition among global carriers to capture growing traffic between South Asia and North America, particularly amid rising demand driven by diaspora travel and business links.
