Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat has taken a positive view of the traffic case filed against his own car, saying no one is above the law.

On Thursday morning (September 3), the Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) filed a case against the minister's car and its driver for driving the wrong way on Circuit House Road in the capital. He spoke to reporters about the incident that night at the entrance to the National Parliament.

The minister explained that on the stretch of Circuit House Road opposite the Chief Justice's residence, heavy congestion had built up on the left side. Spotting a gap in the road divider, his driver attempted to cross into the opposite lane — a clear violation of traffic law. Although the mistake was the driver's, the minister, who was in the car at the time, expressed regret over the violation as soon as it happened.

Even so, Millat said he was not upset by the police's decision to file the case and impose a fine — in fact, he said he was pleased. In his words, the legal action taken against his car and driver shows that the rule of law is functioning in the country, and sets an example that should discourage others from attempting the same thing in future.

Stating that no one who breaks the law will get away with it, the minister said the government led by Tarique Rahman is deeply committed to good governance and the rule of law, and that this government will not tolerate a traffic violation by a minister or any other influential person under any circumstances. He added that the incident proves the Tarique Rahman government is determined to firmly establish the rule of law in the country, and that in the government's view, no one — ordinary citizen or influential figure alike — will be placed above the law.
