Avolon orders 110 Airbus jets in major A330neo, A320neo deal

Aircraft lessor Avolon has placed a firm order for 110 Airbus aircraft, comprising 35 A330-900 and 75 A320neo Family jets, the European planemaker said in a press release on Friday.

Airbus described Avolon as a leading global aviation finance company. The order is incremental, taking Avolon’s total for the A330-900 to 114 aircraft and its A320 Family orders to some 650.

Avolon Chief Executive Andy Cronin said the order strengthens the company’s long-term delivery pipeline and positions it to support airline customers’ fleet growth and replacement needs well into the next decade. He cited “strong demand for new aircraft” and said Avolon expects demand for both the A330neo and A320neo to remain firm, given the long-term growth of the aviation sector.

Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Airbus Executive Vice President Sales for the Commercial Aircraft business, called it a major order for both families. He said it confirms Avolon as the leading lessor of the A330-900, and shows continued demand from lessors who value the aircraft’s flexibility across domestic, regional and long-haul routes.

Airbus said the A330neo is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and can fly up to 8,100 nautical miles (15,000 kilometres) non-stop. It said the aircraft cuts fuel burn, carbon dioxide emissions and operating costs by 25 percent compared with previous-generation competitor aircraft.

The planemaker said the A320 Family has won more than 20,400 orders globally, making it the world’s most popular single-aisle aircraft. It claims at least 20 percent fuel and CO2 savings over previous-generation single-aisle jets. The family includes the larger A321neo.

The press release did not disclose the value of the order, delivery schedule or engine choice for the A320neo Family aircraft. The performance and efficiency figures are Airbus’s own claims.
