Bangladesh, Lithuania eye deeper ties during EU presidency

Bangladesh and Lithuania today discussed deeper bilateral engagement during Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the European Union from January to June 2027, with focus on trade, technology, investment and mobility.
The issue came up during a meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and visiting Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas at the foreign ministry here this afternoon, said a ministry’s press release here.
Both sides discussed how Lithuania’s EU Presidency could create opportunities to expand Bangladesh-Lithuania cooperation and strengthen engagement with the European Union.
The state minister stressed the need to explore untapped potential in bilateral relations and expand cooperation in trade and investment.
Kobir requested Lithuania to import more Bangladeshi products, including ready-made garments, textiles, pharmaceuticals, leather and leather goods.
He also highlighted investment opportunities in Bangladesh and invited Lithuanian investors to explore potential sectors.
The two sides placed particular emphasis on expanding cooperation in information technology, e-registration, e-governance, financial technology, cybersecurity, e-transportation, digitalization of transport systems, artificial intelligence and high-tech medical devices.
Verbickas highlighted Lithuania’s capabilities in these areas and expressed keen interest in strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh.
The two sides also discussed employment opportunities, human mobility and migration, as well as visa facilitation for Bangladeshi students, businesspeople, investors and tourists.
Kobir raised the Rohingya repatriation issue and sought Lithuania’s support for Bangladesh’s efforts to ensure a sustainable solution.
The Lithuanian vice-minister congratulated Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on assuming the presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He expressed hope that Bangladesh-Lithuania relations would gain further momentum during Bangladesh’s UNGA presidency and Lithuania’s EU Presidency.
Kobir also highlighted the importance of the EU-Bangladesh Business Forum, compliance with existing business frameworks and greater use of Lithuania’s regional connectivity in the Baltic region and beyond.
He said such engagement could help unlock untapped opportunities and generate mutual economic benefits for both countries.
Both sides expressed interest in maintaining sustained engagement to deepen bilateral ties and broaden cooperation in regional and international forums.
