Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment on Monday held a high level coordination meeting to send more skilled workers abroad and open new labour markets for Bangladeshi nationals.
Held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, the meeting brought senior officials from both ministries together to plan a course to strengthening Bangladesh’s foothold in the global labour market.
Discussions centred on strategies to increase the flow of skilled and semi-skilled workers overseas, expand into new destination countries, and better protect the welfare of Bangladeshis already working abroad.
Attending the meeting were State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Md. Nurul Haque, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, Prime Minister's Adviser Mahdi Amin, and senior officials from both ministries.
The most concrete outcome of the meeting was a decision to form a joint committee tasked with tightening coordination between the two ministries and driving more effective implementation of overseas employment programmes.
The Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment said the initiative forms part of the current government's electoral commitments—a pledge to expand economic opportunities for Bangladeshis seeking work abroad while ensuring their safety and wellbeing once they get there.
