Bangladeshi couple rides 13,000 km for first Umrah

Musdaque  Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi biker, fulfilled his dream by riding over 13,000 kilometres from Bangladesh to Makkah for Umrah, crossing 10 countries on two wheels in an extraordinary journey that captured hearts across continents.

Pakistani border rangers, who typically keep gates closed, made an exception for the Bangladeshi traveller. “We never open this gate for anyone. But since you're from Bangladesh, we are allowing it,” a ranger told him at the crossing.

Musdaque  and his wife travelled through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Motorcycle gave them complete freedom to explore tourist destinations at their own pace.

His Bangladesh-numbered bike became a conversation starter wherever he went. Expatriate Bangladeshis greeted him with overwhelming emotion upon learning about his homeland journey. “My bike told everyone I came from abroad. When I said I rode from Bangladesh, a story started, then friendships. I made thousands of friends along the journey,” Musdaque  said.

Journey required passport, visa, travel tax, Carnet de Passage, and NBR permission. Customs treats motorcycles as exportable objects for such cross-border trips.

Challenges emerged when someone stole a phone from their host's house. Language barriers complicated police involvement, though local youths eventually helped file reports.

Fellow travellers praised Musdaque  highly. “Musdaque  is a very good boy, an excellent tourist rider. He has strong communication skills and understands diplomatic matters very well,” one companion said.

Musdaque  urged government reforms to ease cross-border motorcycle travel. “NBR permission should be more flexible. Indian riders don't face so many hurdles when travelling to Nepal or Bhutan,” he said, calling for stronger diplomatic relations and simplified processes.

Musdaque  now plans to ride through several European countries, continuing to inspire young Bangladeshi adventurers.
