BermudAir, Bermuda's national carrier, has placed a firm order for 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, marking the airline's first-ever order with the European planemaker, Airbus said in a statement on Wednesday.

The deal, unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow, had previously appeared in Airbus's order book in March as an order from an unidentified customer, according to the statement.

The A220-300s will be configured in a 135-seat, three-class layout and are expected to allow BermudAir to launch new non-stop routes linking the Atlantic and Caribbean regions with greater scheduling flexibility, Airbus said. The aircraft type offers a 25 percent reduction in fuel burn and carbon dioxide emissions per seat compared with previous-generation jets, the manufacturer added.

Adam Scott, founder and chief executive officer of BermudAir, said the A220 was suited to the airline's expansion plans, citing its range and performance at constrained airports as factors that would let it link Bermuda, the Caribbean, and North America with direct service.

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus's executive vice president of sales for commercial aircraft, said the order confirmed the A220's suitability for targeted regional growth and introduced the aircraft to a new operating environment in the Atlantic and Caribbean.

The agreement extends the A220's footprint into a region where the aircraft has not previously operated, according to Airbus, which described the deal as a milestone for the programme's push into specialised regional and mainline markets.

The A220 family, developed by Airbus after it took a majority stake in Bombardier's C Series programme, carries between 100 and 160 passengers on routes of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 kilometres). As of the end of June, 526 A220s had been delivered to more than 25 operators worldwide, with the aircraft's cumulative order book standing at more than 1,100 units, Airbus said.

BermudAir began operations in 2023 and has positioned itself as a premium regional carrier connecting Bermuda with destinations in North America and the Caribbean.
