The interim government has officially declared Cox's Bazar Airport as an international airport through a gazette notification. The notification was issued on Sunday (October 12) and signed by Ahmed Jamil, Joint Secretary of the CA-1 branch of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
According to the gazette, “By the authority granted under Rule 16, Sub-rule (1) of the Civil Aviation Rules, 1984, Cox's Bazar Airport is hereby declared as Cox’s Bazar International Airport.” The order, issued in the public interest, will come into immediate effect.
It is worth noting that development work on Cox’s Bazar Airport began between 2009 and 2013. A new phase to upgrade the airport to international standards was initiated in 2015. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) started work in 2021 to upgrade the airport to international standards. Under this project, a new terminal and various infrastructure developments are currently underway and are expected to be completed by December this year. In the meantime, the runway has already been extended from 6,775 feet to 9,000 feet. The full completion of the project is scheduled for December 2026.
