Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, has taken delivery of its first 737 MAX aircraft from Boeing, marking the start of a broader fleet modernisation programme, the US manufacturer said on Sunday.
The 737-8 jet is the first of 18 aircraft that will be leased from SMBC Aviation Capital and introduced into the airline’s operations, representing the debut of the 737 MAX model in Egypt.
EgyptAir said the new aircraft would play a central role in improving efficiency and passenger experience while reducing fuel consumption and emissions by around 20 percent compared with older models. The airline plans to deploy the jet on short- and medium-haul routes, including services to European destinations such as Paris, Brussels, Istanbul, and Vienna.
“The delivery of our first Boeing 737 MAX marks a significant milestone in our fleet modernisation strategy,” said EgyptAir Holding chairman and CEO Ahmed Adel, adding that the aircraft aligns with the airline’s goals for sustainable growth and a modern fleet.
Boeing highlighted that the 737-8 offers operational commonality with EgyptAir’s existing fleet of Next-Generation 737 aircraft, allowing for smoother integration and cost efficiencies. The airline currently operates about 30 of the earlier 737 models alongside widebody aircraft, including Boeing 777s and 787 Dreamliners.
SMBC Aviation Capital said the delivery reflects its ongoing partnership with both Boeing and EgyptAir, aimed at supporting airlines with more fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft.
Passengers travelling on the new aircraft will also experience upgraded cabin features, including Boeing’s Sky Interior, which offers enhanced lighting, larger windows, and expanded overhead storage.
Boeing noted that the delivery builds on a relationship spanning six decades with EgyptAir, which first ordered 737 aircraft in 1975. The move comes as airlines globally continue to renew fleets with more efficient aircraft to cut costs and meet environmental targets.
In the coming years, EgyptAir will continue its fleet renewal efforts and expect further deliveries of the 737 MAX jets.
