UAE's national carrier Etihad Airways has issued a clarification following media reports that claimed there was a fire on one of its aircraft preparing to depart from Chennai International Airport to Zayed International Airport.
The reports said emergency services responded immediately, and all passengers were safely disembarked, with no injuries reported.
According to Gulf News, however, airline officials said the aircraft returned to the gate before departure because of a technical issue and stressed that there was no fire onboard.
“Contrary to some media reports, there was no fire on board the aircraft. The aircraft returned to the stand due to a technical issue,” the airline said in a statement.
What caused the delay
The airline said flight EY343 from Chennai to Abu Dhabi was delayed after the aircraft returned to the gate, and the crew later disembarked the passengers.
“Emergency services were activated as a precautionary measure, based on the Chennai International Airport (MAA) safety protocols,” Etihad added.
The carrier said the flight was expected to depart around three hours behind schedule. “We apologise for the inconvenience, and our teams are assisting guests with their onward journey,” the airline said.
Passengers travelling on EY343 were also advised to update their contact details through Etihad’s website to receive flight updates by SMS or email.
“The safety and comfort of our guests and crew remains Etihad’s highest priority,” the airline added.
