Govt moves to revive eight airports

The government plans to revive eight abandoned and unused airports as part of a broader effort to strengthen domestic air connectivity, boost tourism and support regional economic growth. State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said feasibility studies are likely to be conducted through local consulting firms before the airports are reopened. The airports identified for revival are Bogura, Thakurgaon, Lalmonirhat, Ishwardi, Cumilla, Shamshernagar, Khan Jahan Ali and Patuakhali. Among them, Bogura Airport has been given top priority and is being considered for development into an international-standard facility. Plans include a flying academy, pilot training facilities and supporting aviation infrastructure. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh is working to appoint BUET as consultant for design and technical surveys. The state minister said the revival plan will also support cargo movement of agricultural produce and cottage industry goods from northern districts such as Thakurgaon and Lalmonirhat. Ishwardi Airport is expected to gain strategic importance due to travel linked to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and Russian personnel movement. Shamshernagar is likely to boost tourism in Sylhet and Moulvibazar, particularly the tea industry and expatriate travel. The government said the programme will be implemented in phases, with CAAB strengthening technical capacity to support long-term expansion. Authorities expect the initiative to improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade and tourism, and enhance access to key economic and industrial centres across the country.
