Bangladesh's public transport system is advancing with the
launch of an online recharge service for Rapid Pass and MRT Passes through a
dedicated mobile app. This initiative, inaugurated by Chief Adviserâs Special
Assistant Sheik Moinuddin at the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA)
in Tejgaon, aims to digitize and modernize commuting. By enabling app-based
recharges, it promotes the wider use of smart cards in metro rail, buses, and
other public transports, reducing the need for physical counters and enhancing
convenience.
The service was officially rolled out following a web-based
recharge introduction on November 25, 2025, at Agargaon Metro Station. The
Android app became available on the Google Play Store starting January 1 this
year, fulfilling earlier announcements. Chaired by DTCA's Executive Director
(in charge) Dr. Md. Mashiur Rahman, the event highlighted how this app will
boost passenger services and encourage seamless digital payments.
To get started, download the âRapid Passâ app from the
Google Play Store. Complete a one-time sign-up by providing your details. If
you're already registered on the Rapid Pass website, log in using the same
credentials, your linked cards will appear automatically. New users can add
Rapid Pass or MRT Pass cards by entering the card details.
Recharging
is straightforward and secure:
- Log in and select the card to recharge.
- Enter an amount between Tk 100 (minimum) and Tk 5,000
(maximum).
- Choose a payment method: bKash, Rocket, Visa, AMEX, or
MasterCard.
- Complete the transaction; a confirmation SMS will be
sent to your registered mobile number.
Note that the recharged balance activates only after tapping
the card on an add-value machine at a metro station. Only one pending recharge
is allowed per card at a time. Blacklisted or illegal cards cannot be
recharged. If needed, cancel a pending recharge within seven days before
activation, but a 5% service charge applies.
The
app offers additional features for better management:
- View recharge history and card usage details.
- Check balances instantly using NFC-enabled smartphones.
- Recharge anytime, anywhere, without visiting stations.
This service not only saves time but also paves the way for
expanded Rapid Pass adoption across public transports. Authorities emphasize
its role in improving service quality amid ongoing modernization efforts. For
issues, refer to DTCA guidelines. With this app, commuters in Dhaka and beyond
can enjoy hassle-free, digital public transport experiences.
