Hajrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) has made body cameras
mandatory for all employees handling passenger luggage to eliminate baggage cutting and theft.
Technology will be fully implemented across all
airlines operating at the airport, except US-Bangla Airlines, within the next
15 days. Decision follows multiple recent incidents involving expatriates'
luggage being cut and valuables stolen.
Body cameras will store ultra-wide footage for
up to 90 days, allowing authorities to determine whether damage occurred in
Dhaka or originated from abroad. Airport officials confirmed the cameras will
provide continuous monitoring of baggage handling operations.
Airport magistrates already conduct regular
monitoring and body searches of employees before they enter duty areas. Hotline
and WhatsApp-based complaint services are currently operational for passengers
to report issues.
Biman authorities believe the digital surveillance
system will enable immediate identification of offenders and swift action.
Officials stated the measure aims to reduce passenger harassment and luggage
theft incidents to zero, leaving no opportunity for theft.
Move comes as expatriate passengers have
repeatedly complained about finding their checked baggage damaged or items
missing upon arrival. Stolen items typically include electronics, jewellery and
valuable goods brought from abroad.
Airport authorities emphasized that
comprehensive footage storage will serve as concrete evidence in investigating
any future complaints. System is expected to restore passenger confidence in
airport baggage handling services.
