India cuts airport charges for domestic airlines by 25% amid global disruptions

The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced a 25 percent reduction in landing and parking charges for domestic airlines for a period of three months, as authorities seek to cushion the sector from ongoing global disruptions.

The temporary measure, announced on Wednesday, is aimed at easing operational costs for carriers and maintaining stability in India’s aviation sector, which has been affected by volatile global conditions, including rising fuel prices and operational challenges.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu said the government’s priority remains to make air travel more affordable and accessible. He noted that, despite the current pressures on global aviation, steps are being taken to ensure that increased costs do not significantly impact domestic airline operations or lead to widespread disruptions for passengers.

Under the directive, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India will implement the reduced tariffs at major airports under its jurisdiction. The Airports Authority of India has also been instructed to apply the same reduction across the airports it manages.

Industry observers say lowering airport-related charges could provide short-term financial relief to airlines, potentially helping them manage cost pressures without passing them on fully to passengers. However, the limited duration of the measure suggests authorities are closely monitoring the evolving global aviation environment.

The move forms part of broader efforts by Indian authorities to stabilise the aviation sector and sustain passenger demand during a period of uncertainty in international air travel.
