Lufthansa has introduced new traditional Bavarian costumes for cabin crews on selected Oktoberfest-season flights from Munich and is offering Bavarian food and drink on board and in its German lounges, the airline said in a statement.

Spieth & Wensky, a traditional fashion maker from Lower Bavaria in southern Germany, designed the outfits. The airline said the collection combines Bavarian tradition with Lufthansa design elements for the first time. The crane from the company logo appears on the buttons of the knitwear, and the airline's "Wing Pattern" is woven into the skirt and waistcoat.

The new costumes make their debut on Sept 19, the opening day of Oktoberfest, known locally as the Wiesn. Costumed crews will operate flight LH764 from Munich to Bangalore in India and flight LH722 to Beijing. Flight LH768 to Singapore will follow on Sept 27.

Heiko Reitz, Divisional Board Member of Lufthansa Airlines and Hub Manager Munich, said the tradition dates back 20 years. The first costumed crew flew from Munich to New York on Sept 1, 2006, he said. Reitz said the new costume was made exclusively for Lufthansa cabin crews and is "truly one of a kind".

Lufthansa said the festive offering extends beyond those three flights. From Sept 1 to 30, selected intercontinental flights from Munich and Frankfurt serve a Bavarian menu in all travel classes, including white sausage terrine, roast duck, fried chicken and apple strudel. Business Class passengers on continental routes will get an Oktoberfest menu from Sept 17 to Oct 6.

All Lufthansa lounges in Germany will serve Bavarian beer and classic dishes and will be decorated for the festival, the airline said. Passengers in First, Business and Premium Economy on long-haul flights departing Germany will also receive amenity kits in new felt pouches until the end of September.
