A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Lisbon was diverted to Lyon in France on Saturday after a passenger's powerbank caught fire on board, the airline said, according to Gulf News.

The Airbus A321-200 was carrying 198 passengers when the incident occurred en route to the Portuguese capital.

A Lufthansa spokesperson said the crew immediately placed the battery in a protective bag designed for lithium batteries. No one was injured.

The pilot decided to divert to Lyon as a precaution, and the aircraft landed without incident.

The passengers stayed overnight at a hotel and continued their journey to Lisbon on Sunday.

"The safety of our passengers and crews remains Lufthansa's top priority at all times," the airline said in a statement.

Lufthansa has banned the use and charging of external batteries on its aircraft since January. Passengers are still allowed to carry up to two powerbanks in the cabin, subject to certain safety conditions.
