Malaysia Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Weixin Pay to improve the travel booking experience for Chinese travellers, the airline said in a press release on Thursday.
Under the agreement, the two sides will support the launch and adoption of the airlineâs planned Weixin Mini Program through joint campaigns across the Weixin ecosystem and Malaysia Airlinesâ own marketing channels.
The MoU was signed by Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airline Business at Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), and Ben Yang, Managing Director of Weixin Pay for Southeast Asia, North America, and Latin America. The release said it was signed in conjunction with Malaysia Airlinesâ 2026 China Trade Gala, held in Shanghai on September 22.
The airline already operates a Weixin Official Account and Weixin Channels to engage Chinese travellers. The partnership will build on these platforms to lay the groundwork for the mini program, linking destination content, promotional offers, and booking services, the release said.
âOur presence on Weixin has helped us build closer connections with Chinese travellers,â Dersenish said. âBy bringing relevant content, offers, and access to booking services closer together across familiar digital touchpoints, we aim to make the journey from travel inspiration to booking more seamless.â
Ben Yang said the partnership would combine the reach of the Weixin ecosystem with the airlineâs marketing resources. âWe aim to help more Chinese travellers discover the airlineâs destinations and offers and access its booking services,â he said, adding that the company looks forward to creating sustainable commercial value for both parties.
According to the release, Malaysia Airlines and Weixin Pay will coordinate joint go-to-market campaigns, with promotional and engagement activities across Weixin Pay, Channels, Official Accounts, and social sharing. The initiatives are intended to raise brand visibility, widen audience reach, encourage use of the mini program, and support better booking conversion.
The planned mini program will be another digital gateway to the airlineâs network, which currently serves Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Changsha, Hong Kong, and Taipei in Greater China, the release said.
It added that MAGâs sister airline Firefly plans to introduce daily Kuala Lumpur-Kunming services, subject to regulatory approval.
The release did not give a launch date for the mini program or any financial terms of the MoU.
