Remittance
worker accused officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International
Airport (Dhaka airport) of demanding Tk 30 thousand bribe despite arriving more
than an hour before his flight departure.
He recorded a video of the incident on Saturday,
stating he had over one lakh followers on social media, which became viral
online.
Migrant worker, who has been sending remittances for 10
years, claimed airport staff refused to process his baggage even though he
reached the airport at 11:20 am for a 12:25 am flight.
"They told me to go upstairs and pay Tk 30
thousand. What is this, brother? What kind of price is this?" the worker
said in his video statement. He questioned whether corruption remained
unchanged despite the country's independence.
Worker alleged that when he tried to check in his
goods, officials stopped him and directed him to another area. After reaching
there, an officer allegedly told him that processing would only happen if he
paid Tk 30 thousand.
"I still have an hour left. But now they are
telling me to go upstairs and pay Tk 30 thousand. Is this why we left our
country?" he said, addressing other passengers at the airport.
He warned fellow travellers that similar situations
could happen to anyone. Worker mentioned his flight timing had already been
changed from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm before the final schedule.
"I have been sending remittances for 10 years.
Doesn't it have any value?" he questioned during the confrontation with
airport security personnel.
Worker expressed frustration over being asked for money
instead of receiving proper service from officials. He emphasized that officers
could speak properly without demanding bribes.
