A nine-day search for a missing Bangladeshi student in Cyprus has ended in tragedy after a suspect confessed to his abduction and led police to a body believed to be his near the Kofinou migration camp.
Shahruar Ahmed Emon, 22, vanished on June 12 after leaving his shared home in Oroklini at 6:30 pm, telling housemates he was heading to a factory in Kofinou for his first day of work. He later sent a location pin to a friend, but his phone went dead shortly afterward, and he was never seen again.
The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested a 22-year-old foreign national on Sunday. Under interrogation, the suspect admitted his involvement and directed detectives to a location near the Kofinou migrant reception centre and a local slaughterhouse, where a body was discovered.
Forensic teams have cordoned off the area for examination.
The case took a grim turn when unidentified individuals contacted Emon's father in Greece, demanding a ransom.
Two days before Sunday's arrest, explicit ransom messages appeared on social media demanding €10,000 immediately, followed by a further €25,000, warning that the family would "never see his face again" if authorities were alerted.
Police, who had circulated Emon's photograph three days after his disappearance, are working to verify the authenticity of the social media posts as the homicide investigation continues.
