Bangladeshi mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni has become the third woman from Bangladesh and the country’s eighth climber overall to summit Mount Everest, expedition organisers said Wednesday.
Nimni reached the summit of the world’s highest peak at 5:24 am local time (2345 GMT Tuesday), according to a statement issued by the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club, citing expedition management company 8K Expedition.
Her ascent marks the latest milestone for Bangladesh in high-altitude mountaineering and places her among a small group of Bangladeshis to have successfully climbed the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) Himalayan peak.
Nimni departed Dhaka for Nepal on April 11 to begin preparations for the expedition. The climb was organised by the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club, with financial support from Pubali Bank PLC.
According to organisers, Nimni began her summit push on May 25 from Camp II, located at an altitude of 6,400 metres (20,997 feet). She advanced through Camp III at 7,200 metres before arriving at Camp IV on the night of May 26.
After a brief rest at the final camp, she embarked on the most demanding stage of the expedition, traversing steep and hazardous terrain overnight before reaching the summit early Wednesday.
At the peak, Nimni raised Bangladesh’s national flag, accompanied by two Sherpa guides who assisted her during the climb.
Nimni follows in the footsteps of Nishat Majumdar, who became the first Bangladeshi woman to summit Everest on May 19, 2012, and Wasfia Nazreen, who reached the peak on May 26 of the same year.
Mount Everest, straddling the border between Nepal and China, continues to attract climbers from around the world despite harsh weather, altitude-related risks, and increasing concerns over overcrowding during the climbing season.
