Parliamentary committee holds first meeting, urges transparency

Parliamentary committee holds first meeting, urges transparency

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism of the 13th National Parliament held its first meeting on Thursday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, chaired by committee chairman Abul Kalam Azad Siddiqui, MP.


The meeting began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by introductions among committee members and officials of the ministry and the Parliament Secretariat.


Committee members attending included Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, MP; Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, MP; Lutfullahel Majed, MP; Syed Jahangir Alam, MP; Alhaj Jasim Uddin Ahmed, MP; Mst Suraiya Zerin, MP; Shawkat Ara Akhter, MP; Md Kamrul Hasan, MP; and Md Abu Taleb, MP.


The chairman spoke about the contributions of martyred President Ziaur Rahman to the aviation sector and of the late Begum Khaleda Zia. The committee advised the ministry to work in a coordinated manner, free of corruption and with transparency and accountability, to implement Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s declared policy of “Bangladesh First” and the “zero tolerance” policy against corruption.


The activities of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the Bangladesh Tourism Board, and Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation were presented in detail at the meeting, with the aim of turning Bangladesh into a major aviation hub and an attractive tourist destination.


The committee recommended that the ministry submit a detailed report on the implemented parts of its ongoing activities and on vacant posts. It also recommended that the ministry take necessary steps to fill the vacancies on a priority basis.


The committee also advised the ministry to work in a coordinated manner, guided by the principle “Do the work, build the country,” to develop a modern, safe, and internationally standard aviation and tourism sector. The chairman thanked everyone for helping the meeting run smoothly.


The ministry’s secretary, senior officials of its agencies, and officials of the Parliament Secretariat were also present.
