PIA unveils designer crew uniforms ahead of Dreamliner debut

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has unveiled new cabin crew uniforms by Pakistani fashion designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, known as HSY, which will make their debut on Oct 31, Gulf News reported.

The uniforms will first be worn on PIA’s inaugural Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flight from London to Islamabad on that date, according to the report. They were unveiled on Thursday as part of what Gulf News described as the airline’s effort to modernise and improve its international image.

PIA said the uniforms were designed for comfort, practicality, and elegance, particularly for crew on long-haul flights, Gulf News reported. The collection uses breathable fabrics and structured tailoring meant to allow greater freedom of movement, with colours and detailing drawing on Pakistani craftsmanship.

“Designing for our national flag carrier is about capturing our collective pride and the genuine warmth of Pakistani hospitality,” Yasin said, according to the report. He said the aim was for crew to feel confident and comfortable representing Pakistan abroad.

Yasin was chosen after a competitive presentation by 10 Pakistani designers in Karachi, the report said. The judges included Khaadi founder Shamoon Sultan, designer Nilofer Shahid, beauty entrepreneur Nabila, Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design Vice-Chancellor Hina Tayyaba Khalil, and PIA aviation veteran Naseem Tehrani.

Gulf News noted that PIA has a history of working with fashion designers. French designer Pierre Cardin created its A-line tunic and hood in 1966, and British designer Sir Hardy Amies designed uniforms in the 1970s. Pakistani designer Nomi Ansari worked on the crew’s look for 12 years.

The uniform change comes as PIA works to rebuild its international presence under a private investor consortium that took over management control earlier this year, the report said. PIA has also announced that its London services will rise to seven weekly flights from Oct 27, five from Islamabad and two from Lahore, according to Gulf News.
