Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman has announced initiatives to rapidly launch the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), signaling governmentâs focus on expanding aviation infrastructure.
Special inter-ministerial meeting was held at Secretariat on Sunday to discuss third terminal operations. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita and Deputy Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat briefed journalists after the meeting.
Ministers confirmed PMâs directive to expedite terminal launch, though specific timeline was not disclosed. Third terminal has remained incomplete for years despite substantial investment.
Announcement comes as Bangladesh seeks to strengthen position as regional aviation hub. HSIA currently operates two terminals serving over 2 crore passengers annually. Third terminal is expected to significantly increase capacity and reduce congestion.
Newly elected government's urgency follows recent fire incident at airportâs cargo section in October last year, which exposed infrastructure gaps and operational challenges. Probe report submitted to Chief Adviser ruled out sabotage but highlighted institutional capacity deficiencies at Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
Third terminal project has faced multiple delays over past decade due to funding constraints, technical issues, and administrative challenges. Experts have long called for additional terminal capacity to match growing passenger demand and airline operations.
Countryâs aviation sector has expanded rapidly with increased international connectivity and new airline partnerships Successful third terminal launch would position Dhaka as more competitive transit point in South Asian region, particularly against regional rivals like Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangkok airports.
