US envoy claims billions more in Boeing purchases, but Dhaka’s aviation establishment appears in the dark

A social media post from a senior US diplomat has landed like a “ghost deal” in Bangladesh’s aviation industry—worth billions of dollars, yet apparently leaving little trace in Dhaka.

Sergio Gor, US Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs and Ambassador to India, claimed on X that President Donald Trump and Bangladesh’s Prime Minister struck “another incredible Deal”, committing Bangladesh to spend billions on additional Boeing aircraft and “significantly” increase its initial order.

But where is the deal?

Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed an agreement with Boeing on April 30 for 14 aircraft. Biman spokesperson Mohiuddin Ahmed told Aviation Express that the airline had no additional information beyond that publicly announced agreement.

Contacted by Aviation Express, a Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry spokesperson also confirmed that no additional aircraft deal had been signed between Dhaka and Washington beyond the 14-aircraft Boeing agreement.

The US Embassy in Dhaka offered no details either.

For now, Gor’s billion-dollar claim hangs over Bangladesh aviation like a ghost—dramatic, expensive and unexplained.
