UN Tourism opens applications for Best Tourism Villages 2026

UN Tourism has opened the call for applications for the Best Tourism Villages 2026 initiative, inviting member states to nominate rural destinations that demonstrate sustainable tourism development and community-based growth.

In a statement issued on February 27, the UN tourism body said its flagship programme aims to recognise villages that preserve cultural and natural heritage while using tourism to support local economies and improve community well-being.

Since its launch in 2021, the initiative has received more than 1,000 applications from 100 countries. The programme’s global network currently includes 319 rural destinations, with over 230 villages recognised as Best Tourism Villages and 83 participating in an upgrade programme across 65 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East.

“Tourism is a proven game changer for rural communities,” said Shaikha Al Nuwais. “With our Best Tourism Villages we are showcasing the very best examples, where it is keeping traditions alive, supporting small businesses or preserving nature. Now we want to expand our network and give tourists even more chances to enjoy authentic experiences that make a real difference when they travel.”

Under the 2026 edition, UN Tourism member states may submit up to eight candidate villages through their respective national tourism administrations. Applications will close on June 9, 2026, while the villages selected as Best Tourism Villages 2026 are expected to be announced in the third quarter of the year during a UN Tourism event.

According to the organisation, applications will be assessed by an independent advisory board of international experts. The evaluation will consider several factors, including sustainability, governance, cultural and natural heritage, infrastructure, and the well-being of local communities.

The Best Tourism Villages initiative forms part of UN Tourism’s broader Tourism for Rural Development Programme, which seeks to promote tourism as a driver of economic diversification, resilience, and inclusive growth in rural areas. The programme also supports the protection of landscapes, cultural diversity, and traditional knowledge systems while encouraging tourism strategies aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The initiative operates through three main components: recognition as a Best Tourism Village for destinations meeting the required standards; an Upgrade Programme that provides technical support to villages needing further development; and the Best Tourism Villages Network, which enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnerships among participating communities.

UN Tourism said expanding the network could help rural destinations strengthen their tourism strategies while offering travellers more opportunities to experience local cultures and natural environments. The announcement signals continued efforts by the organisation to integrate sustainability and community development into global tourism practices.
