The US ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, sampled the cityâs famous âKalai Rutiâ, or traditional flatbread on Tuesday, and called it âdarun mojaâ (really delicious).
The ambassador visited Rumon Kalai House, a popular eatery in the Uposhohor New Market area, where he watched bakers prepare the bread and showed keen interest in the traditional cooking process. He photographed the preparation on his phone and posed for selfies with restaurant staff.
Beyond the Kalai Ruti, Christensen also observed the preparation of eggplant mash and goose meat, asking about the ingredients and methods used in each dish. He later sat down for lunch with his wife, sampling all three items.
Speaking to journalists afterward, the envoy said he was struck by the flavours of Rajshahi's traditional cuisine. "The taste of the Kalai Ruti, goose meat, and eggplant mash was extraordinary. I really liked this traditional food of Rajshahi," he said.
Word of the ambassador's visit drew a crowd of curious locals to the restaurant, with many gathering outside hoping for a glimpse of him. Embassy officials maintained tight security throughout the visit.
Kalai Ruti, a staple of Rajshahi's culinary identity, has increasingly drawn attention from visitors and foreign diplomats in recent yearsâand Tuesday's visit added to that growing recognition.
