US Ambassador visits Bangladesh's historic Varendra Research Museum

US Ambassador visits Bangladesh's historic Varendra Research Museum

The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, has visited the Varendra Research Museum, one of the country's oldest museums.


The information was shared in a post published on the verified Facebook page of the US Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday (July 5).


The post includes, the Varendra Research Museum is one of Bangladesh's oldest museums. Conservation and restoration work at the museum was carried out in 2011 and 2013 with support from the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.


Located in Rajshahi, the Varendra Research Museum is Bangladesh's first museum and is renowned for its rich archaeological collection. Established in 1910 through private initiative, the museum is currently administered by the University of Rajshahi.


During the visit, Ambassador Christensen toured the museum's galleries, rare manuscript collection, and library with Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Faridul Islam and Acting Director of the Varendra Research Museum Professor Kazi Md. Mostafizur Rahman.


Speaking after the visit, the ambassador said the tour reflected the United States' interest in Bangladesh's cultural heritage as part of the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of US independence.


He praised the Varendra Research Museum and the Rajshahi University authorities for their efforts to preserve Bangladesh's cultural heritage and expressed interest in supporting the preservation of the museum's collections in the future.


The Rajshahi University vice-chancellor later presented the ambassador with a commemorative gift. Embassy officials, teachers and students of Rajshahi University, and officials of the Varendra Research Museum were also present during the visit.
