US Embassy warns of penalties for overstaying US visas

The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned travellers that overstaying their authorised period of stay in the United States could lead to severe immigration consequences, including a permanent travel ban and possible criminal prosecution.

In a notice posted on its verified Facebook page on October 17, the embassy said consular officers have access to individuals’ immigration histories and can identify past violations.

“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay, you could face a permanent ban on travel to the United States as well as criminal prosecution,” the notice stated.

The embassy also cautioned that consular officers would know about previous immigration violations through access to immigration records.

“There is no such thing as an ‘honest mistake’,” the notice added.

The warning underscores the importance of complying with the terms and authorised duration of stay when travelling to the United States.

Travellers should check the validity and conditions of their immigration status and ensure they leave the country or obtain appropriate authorisation before their permitted stay expires.
