10 dead in Cox’s Bazar resort fire, six from one family

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured in a fire at the Tuptup Resort in Inani, Cox’s Bazar, on Saturday morning, according to local reports. Six of the dead were members of the same Dhaka family.

The fire broke out at around 8 am at the resort in the Patuartek beach area along Marine Drive. Several people are reported missing.

The dead include six members of the family of Ashiqul, a resident of Dhaka’s Banasree: Melita Mehezabien Alvi, Nabila, Maliha, Mila, Zerif, and Faizan. The seventh victim had not been identified in the reports available.

Six people were injured. They are Mannan, 34, Meherunnesa, 30, Masud, 30, Samida, 32, Nafiza Nawar Khan, 29, and Shahabuddin, 31.

Around 11 am, Ukhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atiqur Rahman Majumdar said 27 people had entered the resort, nine of whom were outside at the time. He said details could not be provided until the rescue operation was over.

At noon, fire service official Morshed told reporters that they had recovered six bodies by then. “In addition, we have rescued six injured people and sent them to the hospital,” he said. Two of them were discharged after first aid, he added.

Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md. A. Mannan said all the victims were tourists. The fire is believed to have started from a stove in the resort’s kitchen, he said. A five-member investigation committee headed by the additional district magistrate has been formed to determine the cause.

Earlier on Saturday, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and directed the Bangladesh Tourism Board to send a team to the site, the ministry said.
