190km Dhaka–Rangpur road, Hatikumrul interchange set 2026

Image: Collected.

Key takeaways:

  • 190km highway stretch under upgrade
  • 1.75km interchange at Hatikumrul (larger than Bhanga interchange)
  • Four-lane expandable to six-lane corridor
  • Completion target: mid-2026
  • Jahur Rail Overpass operational
  • Multiple flyovers already open

Construction work on Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur highway upgrade is progressing rapidly, with Hatikumrul intersection in Sirajganj becoming the project's most active site.

Jahur Rail Overpass has completed full structural work and opened for regular traffic, though road-marking remains pending. The 190-kilometre Dhaka-Rangpur highway is being transformed into a four-lane corridor, expandable to six lanes with service roads.

Hatikumrul's massive 1.75-kilometre interchange is taking shape where the old central roundabout once stood. Piling work has begun after demolishing the previous structure. Pillars for the elevated main road are complete, with deck construction now underway.

Several service roads surrounding the interchange have opened for traffic on both sides. Observers believe this interchange will surpass Bhanga interchange in Faridpur once completed. At the current pace, the entire structure should finish by mid-2026.

Nearly all flyovers across the project, except one in Elenga section and the Hatikumrul interchange, have completed structural work and opened for public use. Main four-lane road slab work is done, though carpeting continues in several stretches.

Flyover construction ahead shows visible progress, with piling for pillars finished long ago and several piers now standing. In Sadabad region of Sirajganj, where the four-lane expansion originally started, the main section is complete but one service lane side remains unfinished.

Despite facing lengthy delays previously due to various reasons, the achieved progress proves commendable. Authorities hope this momentum sustains until project completion.
