Armenia, a South Caucasus country, has signed a contract with Airbus Helicopters for the purchase of six H145 multi-purpose helicopters, marking the country’s first order from the European aerospace manufacturer and a major step in the modernization of its rotorcraft fleet, Airbus said in a press release issued on Thursday.

The agreement, which recently entered into force, was finalized during French President Emmanuel Macron's official state visit to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, underscoring growing defense and industrial cooperation between France and Armenia.

Airbus said the six helicopters would be used primarily for transport missions and would provide Armenian authorities with a versatile platform capable of operating in the country's mountainous terrain.

"It is a great honor to officially welcome the Republic of Armenia to the Airbus Helicopters family," said Ludovic Boistot, Vice President and Head of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus at Airbus Helicopters.

"This first contract is a testament to the growing partnership between our company and Armenia, and we are proud to support the nation in modernizing its aerial capabilities," he said.

Boistot added that the H145 would provide Armenia with the flexibility and reliability needed for demanding transport operations and expressed hope for a long-term partnership.

The H145 is a twin-engine, multi-role helicopter widely used for emergency medical services, law enforcement, military support, search-and-rescue operations, and passenger transport worldwide.

Airbus said the helicopter's performance in high-altitude and hot-weather environments made it particularly suitable for Armenia, a landlocked country characterized by rugged mountainous landscapes.

The five-bladed version of the aircraft offers increased payload capacity, smoother flight performance, and simplified maintenance requirements, according to the manufacturer.

Globally, more than 1,800 helicopters from the H145 family are in service, accumulating over 8.5 million flight hours. The aircraft is powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines and equipped with a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system and Airbus' Helionix digital avionics suite.

The helicopter also features a four-axis autopilot system designed to improve safety and reduce pilot workload, while Airbus says it has one of the lowest acoustic and carbon emission footprints in its class.

The deal comes as the landlocked nation looks to diversify its defense and aviation ties amid changing regional security dynamics. Industry analysts may see the purchase as part of Yerevan’s broader efforts to modernize its air capabilities and deepen cooperation with European partners.

Airbus did not disclose the financial value of the contract or a schedule for deliveries of the helicopters.
