Bangladesh and Italy on Wednesday discussed the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen tourism cooperation through improved tourist attractions, transport links and visitor facilities.
The issue came up when Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro paid a courtesy call on Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat at the Secretariat here, said a ministry press release.
The proposed MoU would help expand tourism exchanges between the two countries and strengthen cooperation in developing attractions, connectivity and facilities for visitors.
The growing number of Italian tourists visiting Bangladesh featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides highlighting the potential for further tourism exchanges.
They also explored how the development and opening of Cox’s Bazar Airport could make Cox’s Bazar and other tourist destinations in Bangladesh more accessible and attractive to international visitors.
The possibility of establishing a special “red zone” for foreign tourists was discussed to ensure their safety, comfort and an improved tourism experience.
Alongside tourism, the meeting covered expanding air connectivity, attracting Italian investment in Bangladesh’s aviation sector and developing aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities.
Responding to the Italian government’s interest in increasing flights on the Dhaka–Rome route, the minister said plans to raise flight frequencies would be considered after new aircraft join Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ fleet.
He said the needs of the large expatriate community living in Europe would be taken into account in planning additional services.
Biman currently operates six flights a week between Bangladesh and Italy, according to the release.
The discussions also highlighted investment opportunities in establishing an MRO hub in Bangladesh, drawing on the experience and capabilities of Italian companies Edge Company, Atitech S.p.A. and Gilardoni.
Both sides expressed optimism about strengthening the existing friendly relations and expanding cooperation in aviation and tourism.
They said implementation of the initiatives could improve connectivity, create investment opportunities and accelerate tourism development.
