Emirates on Wednesday unveiled what it described as the world's first airline-operated comprehensive travel insurance product, offering expanded protection that includes conflict-related medical expenses, airline-managed hotel accommodation during disruptions, and complimentary rebooking on other carriers in certain circumstances.

The Dubai-based airline said the new “Comprehensive Travel Cover," developed in partnership with travel insurer Travel Guard, is designed to provide passengers with broader protection against travel disruptions amid growing global uncertainty.

The product is available from Wednesday and can be purchased during booking on Emirates' website or added later through the airline's booking management platform in eligible markets.

Under the new offering, customers will receive coverage for trip cancellations, baggage delays or loss, and unlimited worldwide medical expenses and emergency evacuation, alongside new benefits related to conflict situations.

Emirates said the policy includes reimbursement of up to $25,000 in medical expenses linked to conflict-related incidents and allows travellers to extend their trips by up to 30 days at no additional cost. The coverage applies regardless of government travel advisories.

In addition to insurance benefits, Emirates said it would provide airline-managed hotel accommodation during major disruptions, including airspace closures. The carrier also pledged to rebook passengers on alternative airlines at no extra charge when Emirates flights are unavailable or when itineraries involving other airlines are disrupted due to conflict-related events.

“Listening to customer feedback, we realised that travel demand remains strong, but there was a gap in the market with regards to travel insurance cover,” Emirates President Tim Clark said in a statement.

“Together with Travel Guard, a leader in the global insurance industry, Emirates is pleased to offer an enhanced travel insurance product that is as comprehensive as it is reassuring for a wider range of situations,” he added.

Russel Antonio said the initiative reflects a shared effort to address evolving traveller expectations and establish “a new benchmark in the industry."

Travel insurance has traditionally been offered through third-party providers, but airlines have generally limited their involvement to optional add-on products covering cancellations, baggage loss, and medical emergencies.

The new insurance product is initially available in 28 markets: Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Malta.

Also, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom

Emirates said coverage availability and terms may vary by market and that it will continue to focus on expanding flexibility and support for passengers as global travel demand remains strong, particularly during the peak summer season.
