Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, has signed an order for an Airbus H160 helicopter, marking the agency's first acquisition of the aircraft, Airbus said in a statement on September 3.

The helicopter will be stationed in Kumamoto prefecture in the Kyushu region, joining the FDMA's existing fleet to enhance nationwide emergency response, speed and coverage, according to the statement. Its primary role will be rapid aerial reconnaissance and real-time visual intelligence gathering during major natural disasters, including large-scale scenarios such as a potential Nankai Trough megaquake.

Jean-Luc Alfonsi, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan, said the company was honoured that the FDMA had chosen the H160 to expand its fleet.

"We are deeply honoured that our long-standing customer, the FDMA, has chosen the H160 to expand their fleet and carry forward their mission-critical work. By integrating this aircraft, the FDMA will significantly enhance its operational readiness and reduce emergency reaction times," Alfonsi said, according to the statement. "We are seeing strong and growing interest in the multi-mission H160 across Japan. To ensure these vital aircraft perform flawlessly on every life-saving mission, we are fully committed to supporting the expanding fleet through our dedicated H160 centre of excellence in Kobe."

According to Airbus, the aircraft will be equipped with Helisat satellite technology, which streams high-definition data directly to orbiting satellites, bypassing damaged ground infrastructure to give emergency commanders real-time visibility from affected areas. Airbus said it is also developing custom snow landing gear for the H160 to ensure safety and stability during deep-snow operations in Japan's winter climate.

The deployment builds on a longer relationship between Kumamoto prefecture and Airbus rotorcraft: the prefecture introduced the AS365N3 for disaster management missions in 2001 and upgraded to the AS365N3+ in 2018. The FDMA's new H160 will operate alongside the existing AS365N3+, which Airbus said represents "a major technological leap" in range, safety and operational capability for disaster response across Kumamoto and the wider Kyushu region.

Airbus said the FDMA's selection reflects a broader trend across Japan, where the H160 is increasingly becoming the aircraft of choice for municipal and prefectural agencies. Four H160s are already in service in the country, performing law enforcement, electronic news-gathering and municipal firefighting duties, the company said.

The H160 is equipped with Airbus's Helionix avionics suite and is designed for missions including law enforcement, offshore transport, search and rescue, private and business aviation, and emergency medical services. It is currently in service in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, the United States and several other European countries, according to Airbus.
