AirAsia has advised passengers travelling during the year-end peak period to plan ahead and allow extra time, saying heavier passenger traffic and seasonal weather may affect travel plans.
The airline said in a press release on Monday that Malaysia’s Northeast Monsoon is expected to run from October 27, 2026 to March 2027, with periods of continuous heavy rain, particularly between November and January.
It said the conditions may cause flooding in affected areas, while thunderstorms and adverse weather may also disrupt flight operations. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and take precautions before travelling, it said.
AirAsia asked passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before scheduled departure for international flights and two hours before for domestic flights. All passengers, including those on group bookings, are strongly encouraged to complete self check-in through the AirAsia MOVE app or its website, it said. Self check-in is available from 14 days up to one hour before departure.
The airline also advised passengers to check flight status on its website, especially 24 hours before departure and again before leaving for the airport. It urged them to allow extra time to reach the airport, as heavy rain, flooding and traffic congestion may affect road conditions. For KLIA2, it encouraged passengers to use the Express Rail Link (ERL).
At the airport, passengers should use kiosks to print baggage tags and drop their bags themselves, AirAsia said. Counter check-in will be available only for passengers with reduced mobility, those travelling with an infant under 24 months, pregnant passengers, senior citizens and young passengers travelling alone.
The airline further advised passengers to:
keep the email address and mobile number in their booking up to date to receive flight notifications
check local forecasts and follow official instructions if travelling to or from areas hit by severe weather
make sure passports, visas and other documents are valid before departure
Malaysian passport holders travelling internationally are encouraged to download the MyNIISe or MyBorderPass app in advance to ease immigration clearance at KLIA Terminal 2, it said.
In the event of a disruption, passengers should check their email for updates and self-service options, AirAsia said. They can also contact Bo, the airline’s chatbot.
Passengers with reduced mobility can pre-book wheelchair assistance at the time of booking, or through the “My Bookings” tab on the AirAsia MOVE app at least four hours before departure, it said.
On baggage, AirAsia said each passenger may carry one piece of cabin baggage of up to 56 x 36 x 23 cm and/or one laptop bag, handbag or small bag. The release said the total permitted weight for the two pieces must not exceed 7kg.
Pregnant passengers must fill out a form at the counter before boarding, and those more than 27 weeks pregnant must submit an approved doctor’s medical certificate, the airline said.
AirAsia said it will keep monitoring operational conditions and send updates to affected passengers using the contact details in their bookings. “The safety and well-being of all guests and crew remain AirAsia’s top priority,” the release said.
