Nearly 8.7 lakh voters register for postal ballot

8 lakh 69 thousand 206 voters have registered to cast their ballots by post in the upcoming 13th  national parliamentary election and referendum, figures from the Election Commission (EC) show.

Registration drive, which uses the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app, is open to Bangladeshi expatriates, election officials, and government employees working outside their home constituencies. Among those registered, 7 lakh 82 thousand 678 are men and 86 thousand 526 are women, according to EC data updated at 2:15 pm on Sunday.

Saudi Arabia leads with the highest number of overseas registrations at 1 lakh 69 thousand 254 voters. Qatar follows with 61 thousand 741, then Malaysia with 47 thousand 220, Oman with 46 thousand 652, the United Arab Emirates with 31 thousand 011, and the United States with 26 thousand 531.

Within Bangladesh, 2 lakh 95 thousand 291 voters have signed up under the in-country postal vote category. Cumilla district recorded the most registrations with 74 thousand 674 voters, followed by Dhaka with 67 thousand 533, Chattogram with 64 thousand 560, Noakhali with 42 thousand 934, and Sylhet with 31,504.

At constituency level, Feni-3 tops the list with 12 thousand 554 registered voters. Chattogram-15 comes next with 10 thousand 135, followed by Noakhali-1 with 9 thousand 925 and Cumilla-10 with 9 thousand 870.

Election Commission has extended the registration deadline until December 31. The app launched on November 18 and covers 148 countries, though expatriates must use a mobile number from their host country to complete the process.
