Md Shakawath Hossain, CEO of Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC, has received copyright registration from the Bangladesh Copyright Office for his intellectual work, “Shakawath’s Six Control Points for Food Cost Optimization”.

Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC owns The Westin Dhaka, Sheraton Dhaka and HANSA – A Premium Residence.

Developed from Hossain's more than 25 years of experience in hospitality operations, the framework provides a practical and measurable approach to food cost management. It focuses on six areas: Purchase Control, Inventory Control, Right Transfer, Portion Control, Appropriate Cooking and Wastage Control.

The system brings Purchasing, Receiving, Stores, Cost Control, Finance, Culinary and Food and Beverage Service departments under a single food-cost management framework.

The Six Control Points has been implemented at The Westin Dhaka, Sheraton Dhaka and HANSA – A Premium Residence since 2023. According to the company, its implementation has increased cost awareness and contributed to approximately Tk 2 crore in food-cost savings across the three hotels.

Leaders, department heads and relevant team members from the three hotels have been involved in implementing the framework, which the company said has produced measurable improvements in food cost control and savings.

The framework also incorporates sustainability considerations by helping hotels purchase according to actual requirements, manage inventory, maintain appropriate portion sizes, follow suitable cooking methods and reduce food wastage. The approach is intended to generate long-term cost savings while maintaining food quality, service standards and guest satisfaction.

The Six Control Points has also been incorporated into the Tourism & Hospitality Management curriculum at the University of Dhaka. Plans are underway to introduce the framework through other academic and professional training platforms to help future hospitality professionals develop practical food cost management skills and support sustainability.

“This copyright recognition is an important milestone for the Six Control Points initiative. We are now working to take it nationwide across all areas of Bangladesh’s hospitality sector. We are also working to align it with International hotel brands to explore its future implementation across the globe,” Hossain said.

The copyright registration recognises the Six Control Points for Food Cost Optimization as Hossain's original work and provides a basis for its wider use in the hospitality and educational sectors.
