The Janaza (funeral prayer) of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers martyred in a terrorist drone attack on a UN peacekeeping mission (UNISFA) base in Abyei, Sudan, on 13 December 2025, was held today with full state honors at the Central Mosque of Dhaka Cantonment.
Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M. Nazmul Hasan, and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, alongside senior civil-military officials and media representatives, attended the ceremony, an ISPR press release said.
The event began with recitations of the martyrs' life stories and emotional speeches by their family members.
Boris-Ephrem Tchoumavi, UNISFA Chief Community Liaison Officer, delivered a message on behalf of the UN Secretary-General.
Following the Janaza, wreaths were laid on behalf of the President, the Chief Adviser, and the tri-service chiefs. The UN flag was formally handed over to the bereaved families. The martyrs' remains were transported via helicopter (or by road in case of adverse weather) to their hometowns—Natore, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rajbari, and Kishoreganj—for burial with state honors, the release said.
The Bangladesh government and UN leadership have jointly condemned the attack as a "heinous act of terrorism."
The Bangladesh Army submitted a formal protest letter to UN headquarters, demanding urgent deployment of anti-drone systems across all mission areas, including UNISFA.
The Bangladesh Army and UN headquarters are jointly processing financial compensation for the families of the martyrs.
While the loss is deemed "irreparable," authorities are working to ensure legal and humanitarian support for the affected families, the release further said.
On Saturday, Bangladesh repatriated the bodies of six peacekeepers who were killed in a terrorist drone attack while serving in a United Nations mission in Sudan.
A drone attack on a UN peacekeeping base in Sudan's Abyei area killed the peacekeepers on December 13. Their bodies arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka aboard an Emirates Airlines flight.
Bangladesh Army Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim received the bodies at the airport.
The attack also injured nine peacekeepers. Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya is treating eight of the injured peacekeepers, who are reportedly out of danger.
