US-Bangla Airlines, the largest private carrier in Bangladesh, has finalised a landmark $1.5 billion investment to acquire 21 new Boeing aircraft, marking a significant expansion in the country's aviation history. The deal, announced during the "Beyond with Boeing" event on Wednesday, includes 15 Boeing 737-8 and six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
Government Policy and National Hub Vision
Addressing the event as the chief guest, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat emphasised that the government is actively working to establish Bangladesh as a regional aviation hub.
He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, the government is preparing a comprehensive aviation master plan and developing infrastructure, such as the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which will eventually serve 24 million passengers annually. Millat described US-Bangla’s fleet expansion as a vital step in meeting this growing infrastructure capacity.
Humayun Kabir, Adviser to the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs and Civil Aviation and Tourism, stated that the government intends to make Bangladesh’s economic policy private sector-driven. Acknowledging the challenges faced by private carriers, including high jet fuel prices and the need for a conducive bureaucratic framework, Kabir indicated that the government is reviewing tax reliefs and financial support to ensure private aviation businesses can remain sustainable and continue creating jobs.
Corporate Strategy and Market Share
Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Managing Director of US-Bangla Group, highlighted the economic necessity of the expansion, noting that foreign airlines currently capture over 70% of Bangladesh’s international travel market, leading to a significant outflow of foreign currency.
He revealed that while the market generates approximately $5.8 billion annually, local carriers serve less than 30% of it.
Al Mamun further announced that the airline is fully sponsoring the training of 200 young Bangladeshi pilots and 100 aircraft engineers to reduce dependence on foreign expertise. He stated that the new fleet will allow US-Bangla to increase frequencies on existing routes and launch new services to destinations including Japan, South Korea, and various cities in India, while developing Chattogram and Sylhet as regional international hubs.
Bilateral Ties and Human Capital
U.S. Ambassador Brent T. Christensen described the agreement as an "investment in Bangladesh's future" that strengthens the commercial partnership between the United States and Bangladesh. He remarked that "Bangladesh's best business case is Boeing" and lauded the airline’s commitment to training personnel in the U.S., noting that these pilots will return with world-class skills to strengthen the local sector.
Regulatory Oversight and Employment
Air Vice Marshall Md Mostafa Mahmud Siddik, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), called the induction of brand-new Boeing aircraft a "landmark achievement" for the industry. He commended US-Bangla for generating employment for nearly 4,000 professionals and reiterated CAAB’s commitment to ensuring international standards of safety and security while fostering an environment where local airlines can compete globally.
Technological Advancement
Paul Righi, Boeing’s Vice President of Sales, noted that the selection of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft reflects US-Bangla’s confidence in the future of Bangladesh aviation. He stated that the new aeroplanes would provide the airline with greater operational reliability and an elevated passenger experience as it expands its network across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
The 21 new aircraft will feature advanced passenger comfort technologies, including high-speed internet connectivity, wireless inflight entertainment, and improved fuel efficiency. US-Bangla Airlines, founded in 2014, currently operates both domestic and international routes with a long-term goal of becoming a fully integrated global aviation group.
