10 airlines turn layovers into mini-holidays

Ten airlines across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East offer stopover or transit programmes that let eligible passengers explore another city for free or at a low cost, according to a report by Simple Flying.

The programmes range from free hotel nights for connecting passengers to extended stopovers with no extra airfare. Conditions vary widely, and hotel availability, ticket eligibility, and extra expenses can change the overall value.

ASIA

China’s major airlines: Air China offers qualifying passengers one night’s hotel accommodation, breakfast, and airport transfers in selected cities, including Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Tianjin, and Wenzhou. China Southern Airlines also offers free transit accommodation to eligible passengers, while China Eastern Airlines runs an overnight transit hotel service that passengers can apply for online. The schemes are meant for transit passengers, not multi-day holidays.

Malaysia Airlines: Its Bonus Side Trip programme lets eligible international passengers add another Malaysian destination without buying a separate flight, depending on routes and conditions. Some side trips cost money, and some tickets do not qualify.

Singapore Airlines: Eligible transit passengers can join the Free Singapore Tour, a guided tour of about 2.5 hours covering heritage sites, the Singapore River and the Marina Bay area. Passengers generally need a connection of 5.5 to 24 hours. The tour does not include a hotel stay.

MIDDLE EAST

Etihad Airways: The airline advertises complimentary accommodation for up to two nights in selected three- and four-star hotels in Abu Dhabi, subject to booking conditions and itinerary eligibility.

Emirates: Its Dubai Connect programme may provide eligible passengers with free hotel accommodation, meals, airport transfers, and, where needed, assistance with a UAE entry visa. It generally covers connections lasting six to 26 hours. It is meant for travellers without a more convenient connection, not for unrestricted holidays.

Qatar Airways: Eligible passengers connecting through Doha can book packages through Qatar Airways Holidays, with advertised starting prices of $14 per person for one night, $23 for two nights, $49 for three nights and $76 for four nights, based on two people sharing a room. A transit of at least 12 hours is generally required. Rooms are booked on a room-only basis, and extras are charged separately.

EUROPE

Turkish Airlines: Its Stopover in Istanbul programme offers eligible international passengers complimentary hotel accommodation for up to seven days, subject to itinerary and cabin-class rules. It generally requires a connection of at least 20 hours, and applications are normally due at least 72 hours before the flight. The airline also runs Touristanbul, a guided sightseeing service for connections lasting six to 24 hours.

airBaltic: Passengers on selected connecting routes can extend their stay in Riga for 24 to 72 hours on the same ticket. The programme is not free of charge. The airline charges a non-refundable €50 fee per passenger on eligible fares, and Economy MINI tickets are excluded. Hotels and transfers are the passenger’s responsibility.

TAP Air Portugal: Under its Portugal Stopover programme, eligible passengers can spend one to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto without an extra stopover fare. Participating hotels, restaurants, museums and tour operators offer special deals, but accommodation, meals and sightseeing are not automatically free.

Icelandair: Eligible passengers travelling between Europe and North America can stay in Iceland for up to seven nights without paying an extra airfare for the stopover. Accommodation, meals, car rentals and excursions are paid separately.

Simple Flying advised travellers to compare total costs and check eligibility rules, visa requirements, and extra meal and transport expenses before booking.
